Biblical Top Trumps

Posted by Anne Witton on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 Under: Random stuff

Whilst sorting through files on my computer, I came across a home-made set of Top Trumps based on Biblical characters that I devised about 12 years ago. The rules of the game are quite simple and are as follows:

Object: To win all the cards

Preparation: Deal the cards out so that each person has the same number. Pour yourself a drink and put some Twigletts in a bowl (optional)

Play: Each player holds their pack and only looks at the top card. Choose who starts first (an arm-wrestle is usually a good way to do this). The first player selects a category to pit against their opponent's card. The player must state the category and then state their score in that category. The opponent must then state their score in that category and the person with the highest score wins the card. In the event of a tie, the person whose character has the highest overall score (top right) wins. The winning player puts both cards to the back of their pack and has the next turn, and so on until one person has all the cards.

Example 1: Player 1 has Moses and chooses to call 'Appearances', for which Moses scores 17. Player 2 has Adam (Appearances 3), so player 1 wins the round and puts Moses and Adam to the back of their pack and calls again.

Example 2: Player 1 has Peter and chooses to call 'Popularity', for which Peter scores 13. Player 2 has Esther (Popularity also 13), so player 1 wins because Peter's total score is 62, which beats Esther's total score of 60.

Categories: In each category a higher number is better. Strength = Physical strength; Popularity = Self explanatory; Faith = Ditto; Weakness = Moral weakness (the higher the number, the more the person has managed to avoid being weak); Appearances = A general impression of how often the person pops up in the Bible (rather than an actual number of appearances, cos that wouldn't really work!)
